What I've Been Doing--Official Editing

Reconciling Cultures and Generations: Reflections on Today's Church by Korean American CatholicsIn an earlier blog post, I distinguished between my "official" editing and the editing I do out of love for my family and I've been incredibly busy (for me) with official editing. The third Paul Bechtold Library open access monograph was just published and you can read it—for free as an open access book or purchase a print on demand copy on Amazon for $14.99. The title is  Reconciling Cultures and Generations: Reflections on Today's Church by Korean American Catholics, edited by Simon Kim and Francis Daeshin Kim, copyedited (maybe really a bit more than copyedited!) by me. I'm incredibly proud of how terrific this book has turned out to be, especially with such a lovely cover created by Francis Daeshin Kim with photos from Kevin Considine who I know a bit!

I've started on the next bit of editing, a collection of 14 or so essays on Contextual Theology by faculty from the theology school at Santa Clara University. They are basically riffing off a book on contextual theology by my friend Steve Bevans (whose collection of essays I finished editing a couple of months ago and now need to start indexing). These essays are really interesting reading, each prof having a different context where they do their theology. I'm looking forward to reading the second half of these.

My "family love" editing is also heating up. Lauren, my terrific newest daughter, is taking three courses this semester, while working full-time, and trying to have a life. I just finished editing an interesting paper of hers about how she teaches Chinese children differences in their first language an English. My dad has really learned to be a writer. He is now seeing the difference in just telling a story and writing—he's taking time to edit himself before he sends things to me and he is going back to pieces and trying to make them even more interesting. I think before long we'll have enough new "Grandpa" stories to make another book.

And this is why I'm so behind on writing those dang posts on books I've read for A Century of Books. So, I've decided—this is my blog and I can do what I want! I am only going to blog about the books that I have something that seems important to say about them; the others I will just note on my A Century of Books timeline. I'm still really behind even if I use that criteria. And I want to get more going on the "Heaven" playlist posts—those are taking a lot more time than I envisioned because I'm doing some research along with them and that takes time. But I really feel compelled to do these heaven posts, so I'm afraid book blogs might take their place behind the line of "Heaven" posts.
